摘要

Past open pit mining at the Summitville Mine Superfund Site has left an 800 foot high pit highwall that has been and continues to be a source of rockfall. Much of the source area for rockfall includes rock with a high sulfur content, which, when exposed to water, produces acid rock drainage. Future reclamation of the area located immediately adjacent to the toe of the highwall will include a rock catchment area, and regrading and revegetation of the area beyond the catchment. A means was required to determine if revegetation in the area beyond the catchment would be adversely impacted by acid generation from rockfall debris. The Colorado Rockfall Simulation Program (CRSP) was used to estimate current rockfall parameters at the highwall and predict future rockfall behavior. Rockfall parameters were initially estimated from literature guidance and field observations. These parameters were further refined by calibrating the model to observed locations and sizes of rockfall debris currently in place at the site. The results of the calibration were used to predict future rockfall stopping locations for different diameter rocks. The predicted stopping locations suggest that the size of the design catchment area is adequate and that reclamation of the area beyond the catchment should not be adversely impacted by future rockfall.
