A novel new approach was demonstrated for the site characterization and exploration of phosphate bearing materials at a site in Florida. The new approach consists of using Cone Penetrometer Technologies (CPT) to determine in-situ and real-time the amount of overburden, the quality (i.e. phosphate content) of the phosphate bearing materials, as well as the engineering load bearing capacity of the site. The exploration tools consisted of a cone penetrometer push rig and a standard CPT probe connected to a gamma spectroscopy module. The CPT sensors were used to define the soil stratigraphy, groundwater level and the strength of the soils. The gamma spectroscopy module consisted of a downhole sodium iodine crystal combined with an uphole spectroscopy system designed to detect gamma emitting particles. Although phosphate is not a natural gamma emitter, it is co-deposited with low levels of uranium that are sensed by the gamma tool. Initial correlations of the gamma response and the phosphate quality show a strong correlation. The gamma tool correctly identified the appropriate depth of mining in two demonstration penetrations that were conducted. Both gross gamma and spectral gamma measurements were obtained during the demonstration. The details of the test results are discussed.
