Eight different sulfide mine tailings were tested by two types of kinetic prediction tests, the humidity cell (30 to 60 cycles duration) and the column test (11 to 12 cycles duration), for determination of mineral dissolution rates. These tailings had a wide variety of acid generating potentials. The leachates produced by the tailings "Lou", "Lar" and "Cla" were near neutral pH at the start of the test, and became acid after few months, while the five tailings "Jou" stayed at a near neutral pH for the duration of the test. The differences in geochemical behavior are discussed for the two types of tests and for the different samples. Oxidation-neutralization rate of minerals was determined for each of the two types of kinetic tests. The results demonstrate that there is little significant difference between the rates as determined by the water qualities obtained from both the column tests and the humidity cells tests for these cases. This is contrary to results from several previous studies.
