Closure of the Atlas Uranium Tailings Impoundment

The Atlas Uranium Tailings Facility is a large uranium mill tailings impoundment located on the banks of the Colorado River near Moab, Utah. The tailings facility was operated from the 1950's to the mid-1980's, during which approximately 10.5 million tons of tailings were deposited. The facility is currently being closed under a NRC-approved plan. Closure of the site is being conducted under the supervision of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC), who is the trustee. SRK Consulting (SRK) was selected by PWC to provide geotechnical, hydrogeologic and geochemi-cal consulting services related to characterization and closure planning for the tailings facility. This paper describes the recent work at the site, including a detailed characterization of the tailings, which was performed using a combination of piezocone and geotechnical drilling techniques. Data from this characterization were used to evaluate various methods of dewatering and speeding consolidation of the tailings. The methods considered included vertical wicks, vacuum-assisted wicks, vibro-consolidation, and a combination of air sparging and vacuum wick drainage. Data will be provided from the various field test programs, comparing modeling and pilot-scale tests.
