Polyethylene (PE) drainage pipes are extensively used in tailings and mine waste applications because of their excellent resistance to chemical degradation, relative ease of construction and overall good performance. Limiting the long term tensile stresses in PE pipes is necessary to obtain adequate long term durability. If tensile stresses are too large and in the presence of a flaw or defect, PE pipes may be susceptible to stress cracking-a brittle failure occurring at stresses well below yield. The tensile stresses that may occur in tailings and mine waste applications are discussed. Results from analytical solutions, large-scale laboratory tests and numerical analyses are presented to provide a measure of the tensile stresses from large earth pressures, coarse backfill materials, and perforations. Sources of flaws or defects in PE pipes are also described. Recommendations are given for design and construction procedures that promote greater durability of polyethylene pipes.
