The exterior slopes of high heap fill structures are typically constructed as steep as practical during mining operations to maximize the amount of ore tonnage on the geomembrane-lined leach pad foundations. The maximum allowable heap slope angle is determined in design stability analyses for maintaining stable slope conditions to the planned ultimate heap height. A major environmental concern for closure is the long-term slope stability performance of the relatively high granular fill structures at the end of operations. This paper presents a post-mining slope stability study of heap fill slopes after completion of ore lift loading and leaching operations. The study considers the operational change in heap fill strengths and geomembrane liner interface strengths with respect to high fill loads. This study shows that the post-mining heap slope stability for closure should increase with time, which is in agreement with the historical performance of geomembrane-lined fill structures.
