摘要

Due mainly to the increased community concerns on the potential safety and environmental hazards associated with mine tailings, the tailings management practices in Western Australia (WA) were reviewed in 1989. The review identified significant deficiencies in tailings management and the need for improvements. In response to the findings of the review the regulatory approach to the tailings management in WA has been changed during the 1990s. The changes included formulation of two sets of guidelines and introduction of tenement conditions specific to tailings management. The objectives of the guidelines are to encourage a well-engineered uniform approach to tailings management based on the application of geotechnical engineering. The guidelines have been readily accepted by the mining industry and the consultants engaged in tailings management. Since the introduction of the guidelines there have been significant improvements in tailings management in WA.
