摘要

Renewable energy sources provide over 20% of global electricity, being more than nuclear(17%) or gas(15%) or oil(10%). In New Zealand hydro and geothermal generation meet over 70% of the power demand and these technologies are well understood. The new and emerging renewable energy technologies, particularly bioenergy and wind, at present meet only 2% of global electricity market but are rapidly growing. Experience curves show reductions in costs of 20% for every doubling of installed capacity are likely to continue. Several successful biomass and wind projects already exist in New Zealand based on the excellent "natural energy" resources. New Zealand has had the highest growth in carbon dioxide emissions since 1990 of any OECD country. The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act, soon to become law, will make an impact on greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging further development of renewable energy projects as well as energy efficiency measures. The time has come for further uptake and development for the benefit of the local and global environment and also to provide secure power supplies for rural communities. The trend towards distributed power supply systems will continue. Now is the time to change traditional attitudes remaining in the energy industry if New Zealand is to meet its international commitments.
