Industrial Research Limited (IRL) is working with ZeTek Power plc, a European fuel cell stack manufacturer, to develop distributed generators and standby power sources. Alkaline fuel cells (AFC) use relatively low-cost materials, and are the most efficient fuel cell type known. Modular AFC "stacks" are being made on a production line by ZeTek, while other types like polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) or solid oxide (SOFC) fuel cells are still in testing phases. ZeTek's core business is selling stacks to developers. IRL plans to develop AFC systems for stationary applications of 1-l00kW output. Starting with individual 250W and 500W stacks supplied by ZeTek, we are developing and testing peripherals to make complete power plants. The first target is a 5kW unit in a standby power supply for critical loads, as an optional module for a prototype cleanpower product being developed by a New Zealand power electronics manufacturer. In order to improve the performance of AFC stacks, we have attempted to increase both the average and peak power by pressurising the stacks and also supplying them with oxygen-enriched air. This paper presents the preliminary results and an outline of technical specifications for a fuel cell-based distributed generator.
