In February 2000, three major international organizations, thernSPE, WPC and AAPG jointly approved and published arnsignificant document entitled Petroleum ResourcesrnClassification and Definitions1. This achievement representedrna major step forward in the industry’s attempts to improve thernlevel of consistency in the documentation and description ofrnresources that do not satisfy the criteria for reserves. Thernexisting (1997) SPE/WPC reserves definitions2 werernunaffected; the new definitions simply supplemented the 1997rndefinitions in order to cover the entire resource base. Inrnaddition to providing a single set of terminology for industryrnuse, the document also provided a new classification systemrnthat was designed to facilitate the development of portfoliornmanagement systems by individual countries or companies.rnThe potential benefits of the SPE/WPC/AAPGrnclassification system are twofold. Firstly, it provides thernfacility to expand the sub-division of project maturity, in orderrnto classify projects on the basis of the work requiredrn(reflecting business decisions and budgeting) to move themrntowards commercial production and revenue. This ensures arncontinuous focus on the objectives of asset management, asrnwell as providing the potential for a detailed classification ofrnthe resource base which illustrates clearly the balance of thernportfolio and hence facilitates rational decisions on futurernacquisitions/divestitures.rnThe second benefit of the new system lies in thernconsistent approach to establishing a range of uncertainty,rnregardless of project maturity, which allows the very powerfulrntool of uncertainty tracking to be applied. Despite being firstrnpublished by Arps3 as long ago as 1956, this method isrnsurprisingly little used. In practice, it is the only way to trackrnestimates of recoverable volumes in a meaningful way, and tornestablish on an on-going basis the validity of the methods usedrnto estimate those volumes.
