This paper is based on the field application of competencyrnsystems within an oilfield service company. It definesrncompetency systems, reviews and summarizes literature onrnCompetency Systems, and demonstrates the shift fromrntraditional classroom training to a competency based approachrnwithin the service sector of the petroleum industry.rnThe paper defines the need for knowledge, skills,rnbehaviors,m and experience necessary for an individual tornachieve competence and explains the method by which peoplerncan achieve competence.rnThe paper also discusses the five essential elements andrnthe advantages and limitations of a competency based trainingrnand development system.
