Rapidly developing countries such as India and China face serious energy andrnenvironmental challenges. Sustainable economic growth requires the availabilityrnof clean and abundant sources of energy, and the technologies necessary to usernthese energy sources. Renewable hydrogen, produced domestically, can meet therngrowing needs for power, transportation and even cooking fuel by the use ofrnconversion technologies such as hydrogen engines (combustion), fuel cells andrncatalytic burners. The United States’ National Hydrogen Energy Roadmap, whichrnwas released in November 2002, has provided an incentive to developing nationsrnto follow this US lead. The modest per-capita use of energy by consumers inrndeveloping countries provides an opportunity to these nations to leapfrog into thernhydrogen economy much earlier than is possible in the industrialized nations, butrntechnology demonstrations are needed to establish the viability and the visibilityrnof these products and markets. ECD has successfully converted several smallrngasoline- powered engines to run on hydrogen. Conversion includes applicationsrnfor 2 and 3 wheeled vehicles and small generators. Large-scale utilization ofrnhydrogen will also require means of producing and storing the hydrogen. Solidstaternmetal hydride hydrogen storage can be a critical link for most applicationsrnby providing safe and compact means for off, and on-board storage and shippingrnof hydrogen.
