For the past four years Sandia National Laboratories, California has been developing an advancedrnhydrogen-fueled combustion driven electrical generator based on a free piston engine utilizing HomogeneousrnCharge Compression Ignition (HCCI). Experimental investigation of the efficiency and emissions of this uniquerncombustion combination predict a fuel to electricity conversion efficiency of 50% for the 30 kilowatt, low boostrnprototype under development.rnModeling studies supported by NASA have illuminated the attractive characteristics that result from thernintegration of the free piston generator with turbomachinery. As in the case of high temperature fuel cell / gasrnturbine hybrids, pumping power for fuel/air stream movement can be provided for free by conversion of wasternheat. In addition, the power density of the device can be improved significantly.rnThis paper will explore the advantages of utilizing the free piston generator as the heat source in a gasrnturbine hybrid. System modeling techniques will be presented as well as the potential improvement inrnperformance relative to the baseline 30 kilowatt design. Possible applications are suggested.
