The approach used to develop a methodology and tool (`system') for analysing and modelling the organisational and management aspects of New Product Design and Development (NPD) in COncurrent Engineering (CE) environments is described. A longitudinal `Case Sutdy' approach was used to develop and refine the system. This involved Concurrent Ethnographic [1] method, semi-structured interviews and formal questionnaires at four industrial sites across Europe. The protptype development was part of a larger European research project called `PACE' [2]. The final product consists of a framework for dis-aggregating the NPD organisation, a process modelling methodology and a mechanism (with the aid of a software tool) for analysis and presentation of results. The paper discusses the issues arising from the development and implementation.
