This paper describes the unique bridge type selection process employed on the Louisville Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges Project for two new major complex bridges, one downtown and one several miles east of the city. This process strived to go beyond the traditional methods of bridge type selection by soliciting and intelligently evaluating the public's preferences on key characteristics of global bridge aesthetics, such as height, symmetry, visual complexity, etc. This process was progressive in that it avoided the conventional "beauty contest" approach, while still being controlled by engineers so as to maintain budget and feasibility compliance. A set of guidelines focusing on aesthetics and context sensitivity was developed, along with renderings and simulations in the site context, to ensure that concepts addressed the contextual concerns of the stakeholders. Concepts were enhanced at several steps in the process, by incorporating preferences learned through the unique polling process. This resulted in final alternatives that maximized preferences on key contextual characteristics, providing the selection committee the following final concepts with high confidence in public acceptance: Downtown: 1. Single Tower Cable Stay 2. Three Tower Cable Stay 3. Three Span Thru Arch East End: 1. Diamond Tower Cable Stay with Outside Cables 2. Needle Tower Cable Stay with Outside Cables 3. Needle Tower Cable Stay with Median Cables We believe this is the first application of preference polling to major bridge selection, and introduces a new and extremely useful technique to help the designer deliver desirable context sensitive solutions to an increasingly demanding public.
