Innovative bridge designers and engineers who are open to new materials can provide owners significant life cycle cost savings. Selecting the right bridge steel for special localized environmental conditions involves knowing and understanding the design strength and corrosion properties of candidate steels. New stainless steels have been developed to meet a variety of such conditions. Conventional Type 304 stainless steel with its low yield strength and susceptibility to chloride stress cracking is not usually a candidate for bridge applications. However there are several modern economical stainless steels that combine high strength and excellent corrosion behavior that are finding applications in bridge structures. These steels are classified as weldable ferritic stainlesses such as ASTM A1010 and low nickel duplex steels such as 2304 or 2205. The current paper describes recent examples of stainless steel bridges, as well as the results of research and development programs launched to evaluate the corrosion resistance and design properties (fatigue, buckling) of some of these new materials to allow bridge designers to take full advantage of their properties. Some economical implications of these attractive material choices are also discussed.
