Sustainable use of groundwater requires the design of an appropriate protection and management programme that has three main objectives: maintenance of unpolluted groundwater, prevention of future pollution problems, and restoration of polluted groundwater. This paper focuses on the third objective.rnA decision flow chart for the selection of the most appropriate technologies for the rehabilitation of polluted aquifers is presented.rnAppropriate criteria for the selection of technologies for cleaning up polluted sites are established. The criteria are determined by the type of groundwater pollution problem (type of contaminants and their concentration) and on hydrogeochemical and biological conditions (hydraulic conductivity, pH, adsorption properties of the matrix, presence of micro-organisms, etc.).rnMeasures to contain and minimise the spreading of pollution, and also the physical, chemical and biological technologies available for the rehabilitation of polluted aquifers are described.rnThis study was undertaken in the Laboratdrio Nacional de Engenharia Civil for the author's Ph.D. thesis which was presented to the Faculty of Science of the Lisbon University, Portugal.
