High sulphide bearing mill tailings are preferably stored under water to minimize oxidation. Where this is impractical the contained sulphides generate sulphuric acid which mobilizes metals and can pose a danger to the ecological health of receiving water systems. Many techniques for isolating sulphide tailings from the atmosphere have been considered and testing has shown most to be lacking in some regard. Generally the benefits are not commensurate with the cost. One suggestion that has been explored is the covering of the sulphide tailings with 0.5 to 2 meters of a fine inert solid material to slow the rate of oxygen diffusion to the underlying sulphides, this cover will also reduce the capillary migration of soluble salts from the underlying sulphides to the cover surface, where it can cause root poisoning. This poisoning inhibits vegetative growth thus permitting erosion of the surface by wind or rain.rnA cover for a potentially acid generating tailings pond at 0.5 m depth requires a large tonnage of relatively inert or acid neutralizing material. Such material is not readily available in all locations, particularly in base metal mining areas such as the Canadian Shield where soil is thin and deposits of sand and gravel are sparse. Therefore separation of sulphides from mill tailings was explored to provide a relatively inert material as a by-product of normal operations and at low cost. This paper describes some of the test work carried out to determine the feasibility of providing such product and the evaluation of the resulting low sulphur product as a potential cover material.
