Exposed tailings deposits commonly lose by evaporation more than one-half of the annual burden of natural precipitation deposited on the tailings, mainly during the hot summer season. Evaporation permits ingress of oxygen to the deposit and the oxidation of sulphide minerals within the tailings resulting in generation of sulphuric acid and formation of soluble metal salts. Surface evaporation occurring during a drought cycle causes capillary migration of the metal salt solutions and accumulation of evaporated salts on the surface of the deposit. Dissolution of these salts in a subsequent precipitation event results in contaminated run-off from the deposit. The work described in this paper is directed to eliminating the oxidation of sulphides in the deposit, the migration of salts to surface and the need to treat effluent from the impoundment over a very extended period of time. The technique under development involves the establishment of a composite cover of inorganic minerals, of appropriate layer thickness, hydraulic properties and composition over the deposit in such a way that both evaporation and surface run-off are greatly reduced or eliminated. The system is also expected to be compatible with, benefit from and permit the efficient use of organic materials to further improve cover performance.
