The crude tall oil is one of the main by-products in Kraft pulping process,and residue produced is around 15%(w/w) of the crude tall oil in its separation process.The residue has not been effectively utilized until now.The contents of acid value,fatty acid,resin acid,unsaponifiable matter and the alkali lignin of crude tall oil residue were determined in this paper.The results showed that the acid value of the dry crude tall oil residue is up to 116.02mg KOH/g,and the resin acid content and the fatty acid content are 35.10% and 25.73% respectively.The unsaponifiable matter content is 5.27%.The crude alkali lignin and acid-precipitated alkali lignin content are 47.94% and 29.36%,respectively.The chemical modification of crude tall oil residue and the foaming and dispersing performance of the modified residue on cement paste were also studied in this paper.The results showed that the modified residue had some foaming performance and foam stability and dispersing capability on cement paste,which indicated that the crude tall oil residue has some value for further utilization after being modified.
