The fungal pretreatment of wood chips prior to mechanicla pulping saves electricla enerty,imporves paper struength properits,and reduces pitch content,Fungal pretreatment is also effective on nonwoody plants and benefits sulfite,organsolv,and dissolving pulp production.Preliminary results with biokraft pulpign are encouraging,but an in-depth evaluation is requried.The results of two pilto-scale outdootr chip pile experiments recently conducted at the Forest Porducts Laboratory were comparable to those obtaiend using labroatory scale bioraeactors.,The economics of the process ar eattractive,and the process appears to fit into existing pulp mill faciliteis with some modifications.
