Development of biotechnology for the pulp and paper inustry was probably started prematurely,i.e.,during hte 1970's ,the cradle period of biotechnology.At tha ttime hte knowledge about the enzyme mechanisms involved in the degradatin of wood and wood comoponets was in it's infancy.Also,prouduction of crucial,thermostable and alkaphilic enzymes in cormmercial scale kand at acceptable costs has only been possible in reent years,However,with these hurdlkes overcoem,it seems very likely that hte pulp and paper industry will develop to be a very biotechnolgoy dependent industry.In this chapter the status of biotechnolgoy,use of enzymes in particular,for pulping,pitch removeal,bleachign and enzymatic deinkign is summarized.
