摘要

This paper revisits the research done in understanding the attributes and impacts of automation on the flightdeck, and considers how these impacts manifest themselves in other complex systems where automation of various types is being introduced. The operator is being removed from real world cues in areas such as the engineering design process and in distributed working environments where teams collaborate with each other electronically. Computer-mediated, rather different cues are provided which are potentially not so rich. The discussion draws on experience from a number of projects looking at human factors aspects of concurrent engineering, knowledge management for design engineers, and e-engineering, in an effort to understand why these processes do not always work as effectively as planned.
