A study compared journalists' opinions about new cars with people's subsequent experiences of driving and owning them. Car reviews in Top Gear Magazine were compared with the outcomes of a survey that asked owners to rate their cars on a number of dimensions. Results were mixed - sometimes journalists' reviews were a good predictor of people's experiences with the car, but often they weren't. The kinds of discrepancies that arose have implications for expert appraisals of user-experience. These implications are discussed and recommendations made about how to make such appraisals both accurate and relevant.
