If more older people are to enjoy the quality of life which comes from living in their existing homes, then housing, care and social services providers have to be convinced that investment in adaptations and assi stive technology (AT) will be more economical than the provision of traditional care services. The adaptability of properties varies according to many design factors and the needs of occupiers, so do the requirements for care services. The study showed that adaptations and AT could substitute and supplement formal care, and in most cases the initial investment would be recouped through subsequently lower care costs within the average life expectancy of a "user", and for half of the users within reduced life expectancy due to ill-health. The findings add considerable weight to current initiatives aimed at the more extensive provision of AT.
