Air Traffic Control (ATC) consoles were originally designed by engineers to accommodate technical equipment, giving priority to mechanical and electronic requirements. Traditionally Executive (Radar) controllers work with radar displays, while Planning Controllers work with racks of "strips" in "strip holders". The increasing use of digital data handling has provided Executive controllers with Synthetic Dynamic Displays (SDDs) while Planners are provided with a variety of Electronic Data Displays (EDDs), which are increasingly rendering the traditional strip redundant. Future ATC consoles will increasingly resemble other computer working positions.
