The series of satellite radar altimeter missions hasprovided a huge database of altimeter waveforms overthe earth's inland water surfaces. This paper outlines thecurrent measurement capability. A comprehensiveglobal analysis shows that waveforms from 22,223targets have been identified from ERS2; just under 50%of these targets are currently producing useable timeseries. For EnviSat, 25,363 targets yield 59% of useabletime series. This is attributed in part to the dynamicmode-switching capability of the RA-2. The 10-dayrepeat cycles of TOPEX, Jason1 and Jason2 producelower numbers; reasons for these retrieval differencesare identified and discussed. Using data fromCryoSat-2, and 1800Hz 'burst echo' data from EnviSat,the additional potential for inland water measurementfrom Sentinel-3 is explored. The results demonstratethat the high along track sampling rate of Sentinel-3SAR FBR waveforms can transforms the measurementtechnique to a true global monitoring capability forentire river systems.
