Seismic Response of Elevators in Buildings and Their Sensor Needs

There is a large inventory of elevators in seismically active areas. The elevator systems, and especially their counterweights, are quite vulnerable to earthquake induced ground motions. The paper presents some results of a numerical study, which considers nonlinear flexibility characteristics of the guide rails, brackets, and roller guide assemblies to investigate the vulnerability of these systems in seismic events. The paper also discusses the data collection methods that are currently used during and after an earthquake. The need for a more comprehensive data collection system is emphasized and the use of new sensors is proposed.
