摘要

Metallic pigments are made from non-ferrous metals with a lamellar shape. Their diameters range from 3 μm to 500 μm and the ratio of thickness to diameter (aspect ratio) from 1 : 50 to 1 : 250. Metallic pigments can be used alone (full shade) or in combinations with transparent colorants such as pigments or dyes. All pigments scatter light at the interface between pigment and substrate which is also the case with effect pigments. However, the difference with metallic as well as with pearlescent pigments is, that the light is scattered by a fairly large pigment surface in form of oriented reflection. Metallic pigments thus act as microscopic mirrors. Therefore, the metallic effect is only possible in the presence of lamellar particles which reflect the light and it is strongly dependent on the angle between light source, particle orientation and observer. These types of pigments are mainly based on the following metals: aluminium, copper and alloys of copper and zinc. For historical reasons they are frequently referred to as gold bronze pigments and silver pigments, even though they are not related to the gold and silver metals except for their colouristic appearances.
