Customizing FLUENT to Speed-Up Aerodynamic Vehicle Development

The need to speed-up aerodynamic vehicle development is of fundamental importance to the automotive industry. The method of choice is the reduction of hardware and experiments. In vehicle aerodynamics the wind tunnel is the measure to compare against: numerous configurations can be evaluated within days. To compete, numerical simulation must perform at a comparable level of efficiency. This paper shows how the Opel Virtual Aero Lab (OVAL), an automated workflow tool, was created by combining commercial tools with free software. Besides the improvements in terms of standards and efficiency when running numerous variants, a better understanding of the flow field is the consequence. Aerodynamic optimization by simulation can now be realized with a significantly higher efficiency, on top of the common simulation benefits. As a consequence the impact of external aerodynamics simulation on the vehicle development process has increased significantly.
