The scavenging process for a novel two-stroke engine has been studied using a commercial CFD code. The combustion products are purged by compressed air injected into the cylinder through multiple ports distributed over the cylinder head. A quarter-cylinder model incorporating a dynamic mesh is used to simulate the transient, three-dimensional scavenging flow inside the cylinder. Validation of the CFD model is made through comparison with existing experimental data in the literature, as well as with a unique experimental water model of the engine. Finally, the effectiveness of this novel scavenging system is discussed.
