THE EFFECT OF METAL STEARATES ON THE THERMAL AND UV STABILITY OF POLYETHYLENE

Metal stearates (MSt) are commonly used as acid scavengers, color stabilizers and processing aids in polyolefins. The interaction of MSt with antioxidants (AO) based on phenolic (PN) and phosphite (PS) and UV stabilizers (UVS) based on hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS), was studied following three passes of extrusion, thermal and photochemical aging. Both low density polyethylene (LDPE) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) were included in the study. The MSt used in the study was zinc stearate (ZnSt). Following 3 extrusion passes the melt flow index (MFI) and oxygen induction time (OIT) were evaluated. In the case of thermal and UV aging the mechanical, carbonyl index (CI) and yellowness index (YI) were measured. Experimental results indicated that LDPE and HDPE interact differently with ZnSt, AO and HALS. Following extrusion, PN AO and ZnSt have a positive effect on the MFI of HDPE and a smaller effect in the case of LDPE. The PS AO is detrimental to HDPE when combined with ZnSt and show synergistic effects with LDPE. When the ratio between the PN and PS AO was 2 to 1, respectively, the effects were positive. Upon thermal aging, LDPE and HDPE compounded with PN AO and ZnSt showed relative stability in terms of developing CI, while PS AO and ZnSt addition resulted in a detrimental effect on HDPE. The thermal aging effects onthe YI demonstrated the same trend as found in the CI measurements. In the case of UV aging, addition of 1000 ppm of HALS was found to give sufficient protection to both polyethylene resins, as indicated by the CI as well as YI measurements.
