Sustainable use of Brominated Flame Retardants in Plastics

How to combine fire safety and sustainability in the plastics Supply Chain? The Flame Retardant (FR) industry in cooperation with sector organizations has set up a voluntary emissions reduction program (VECAP) for commonly used flame retardants such as DecaBDE, TBBPA and HBCD. Users of flame retardants are motivated to use the best available techniques to reduce and avoid emissions to the environment. An update of the European Risk Assessment for different FRs will be given. Also the latest developments around the RoHS directive, which is important for the E&E Equipment sector, will be discussed. An important concern for all chemicals is to avoid them entering into the environment. ICL-IP has in its portfolio several brominated flame retardants (BFRs) having a polymeric backbone thus contributing to this. The size of polymeric FR molecules is advantageous since they are too large to penetrate through cell membranes of living tissue and therefore are relatively non-toxic. They have also very low solubility in water, so that once these FRs are incorporated into the plastic matrix, they become integrated with the plastic and leaching is highly unlikely to occur. Examples of such products are: Polybrominated acrylate, brominated epoxy polymers, their end-capped version and brominated polystyrene. They find applications as flame retardants in a wide range of polymers like styrenic homo- and copolymers, polycarbonates and their alloys, polyesters, polybutylene terephthalate and polyamides. For all these reasons, these polymeric flame retardants should be considered as a step forward to a safer environment. This paper will discuss how these polymeric FRs perform in comparison with non polymeric FR additives in several plastic applications.
