A unique combination of chemistries and engineering technologies provide functional coatings to a variety of support materials, particularly on glass sheets. The technologies realize cost savings due to the low equipment costs, low chemical precursor costs and high utilization of materials. In addition, materials can be deposited by the spray deposition techniques that would be impossible or cost prohibitive by other techniques. This technology addresses a problem common to all forms of renewable energy; soiling when exposed to outdoor environments. The loss of performance is quite significant for photovoltaic cells, concentrators and solar collectors due to particles of soil blocking from 5 to 30 % of available sunlight, leading to lowering of the amount of solar power each device delivers. To overcome this problem coatings exist to keep the surface of the solar power device clean and thereby deliver the maximum amount of sunlight to the active component. To provide additional power output from each solar device, photoactive anti-soiling films exist that are also anti-reflective, which allows up to 94 % of the sunlight to pass through the window (without the coating only 89 % of the sunlight passes).
