Five composting processes of yard and kitchen waste were compared with regard to humic substance formation. Humic acids were considered to be a reliable parameter to describe the humification process. The composition of the input material and process conditions influence the synthesis of humic substances. The microbial activity that depends on these conditions plays a key role concerning the balance between humification and mineralization. Respiration activity is an indicator for the microbial activity. Metabolic activities are also reflected by IR spectroscopic characteristics of the composted material. Lab scale experiments showed that a slight enhancement of microbial activity by adding easily degradable carbon and nitrogen sources could improve humic acid formation.
