The main objective of this research was focused on the enhancement of the settling properties of the sludge of an industrial scale Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) by promoting granules formation. For this purpose, two laboratory scale SBRs, R1 and R2, were inoculated and fed with the same sludge and wastewater used in the industrial scale SBR in which a sludge with poor settling properties is normally generated. Both reactors were operated under similar conditions during most of the experimental period with exception of an anoxic phase of 10 and 30 min which was included at the beginning of every cycle of operation of R1. Organic and nitrogen loading rates (OLR and NLR) applied to both systems were as high as 7g COD/(L·d) and 0.7 g N/(L·d), respectively. Nitrogen removal efficiency was 80% in both units even considering that R2 was operated always under aerobic conditions. Granules with similar morphology were developed in both systems. Size distribution was comprehended between 0.25 and 4.0 mm in both cases.
