In order to assess the applicability of the Anammox process for the treatment of industrial wastewaters it is necessary to study the possible toxic effects of compounds commonly present in industrial effluents on the Anammox specific activity. This study is focused on the application of batch tests based on the monitoring of the gas production to determine the maximum specific Anammox activity (SAAm). The SAAm measured was around 0.28 g N-NH_4~+/gVSS·d and it did not depend on the biomass concentration or on the S_0/X_0 ratio in a wide range of values. Substrate and product inhibition effects were also evaluated, showing the Anammox process suitable for the treatment of wastewater with high ammonia concentrations. Nitrite concentration must be controlled under a limit value of 15 mM to maintain 100% of the SAAm.
