The biosorption in marine algae has been associated to its cell wall biochemical properties. The pH and the organic leaching effect in different pH for the native and pre-treated (24,48 and 72 hours) biomass of Sargassum filipendula were investigated. In different pH it was observed that smaller the pH, larger the leaching degree presented by the native and pre-treated biomass. The chemical and thermal treatment of the biomass contributed for the decrease of the leaching. The times of chemical treatment for the biomass showed similar values of the leaching. The ability of the pre-treated biomass to sequester the heavy-metal ions chromium(Ⅲ) and/or nickel(Ⅱ) from different solutions were compared. The competition effect between ions was studied in relation to the removal capacity, presenting the biosorbent higher affinity for chromium in solution. The pre-treated seaweed showed to be an efficient and low cost alternative to be considered in the acid-wastewaters-treatment.
