Two Japanese swords, old and modern ones, were examined in bending test with observations of microstructure. They have fine grain sizes and lath martensites at the sharp edge, even though carbon content range is around coexistence region of lenticular martensite and lath martensite. The four points bending test showed the old one was not broken, but modern one was broken. This difference comes from the thickness of hardened area, the transition area from hardened area to core area and the difference of grain size distribution. The estimated strengths of the swords at the sharp edge are 2552 MPa, and 4645 MPa for old and modern ones, respectively. These values are in the range of high performance tool steel.
