We describe a position measurement of a miniature robot using position sensitive detectors (PSDs). Three PSDs are installed on the miniature robot. The principle of the position measurement and preliminary experimental results are described. The advantages of the proposed method are as follows. First, the proposed method does not cause error due to the tilt of the incident beams, because the PSD outputs the central position of the laser spot. Second, the robot carries the PSDs and a small electrical circuit. What the electrical circuit does is the judgment which the laser spot is on the center of the PSD or not. Finally, wide measurement area is obtained. Since the length of the PSD is short, the position measurement using fixed lasers depends on the length of the PSD. However, the proposed method has the measurement area of the length of the linear stages. In our preliminary experiments, the precision of the measurement is about 200 μm in the linear displacement and 0.01 rad in the rotational displacement.
