A small pilot scale 2-stage aerobic effluent treatment plant comprising a moving bed biofilm reactor and activated sludge reactor connected in series was successfully used to mimic conditions used by the 22ML day~(-1) Norske Skog Boyer mill secondary effluent treatment plant to treat wastewater from its thermomechanical pulp and papermaking process. The ability to mimic these conditions then enabled the treatability of components associated with the Furacell™ process used to manufacture levoglucosenone (LGE) and dihydro-levoglucosenone (Cyrene™) at the FC Five Pty Ltd (FC5) proto-type pilot plant built on the Boyer site to be demonstrated. The biodegradability of sulfolane, acetic acid, furfural, and LGE at many times the concentrations forecast to be present in the combined FC5 and Boyer mill wastewater demonstrated that removal rates in excess of 95% were achieved under stable operating conditions with the appropriate supplementation of the nutrients nitrogen and phosphorous. It was thus concluded that co-treatment of wastewater from the Furacell™ process with pulp and paper mill wastewater would remove both minor and major components and would not cause compromised effluent treatment plant performance. All major and minor components present in FC5 wastewater would be reduced to levels well below that at which effects would be observed in aquatic species.
