The Airborne Imaging Microwave Radiometer (AIMR) is a cross-track scanning totalrnpower radiometer which flies on the NCAR C-130. A rotating scan mirror allows viewsrnof underlying scenes over an angular swath of 120 °. In real time, the data for a singlernrotation are grouped together by the data-processing software and sent to a rack-mountedrnSun Microsystems computer for display and recording. The computer uses the effectivernbrightness temperatures of the calibration loads to calculate the scene brightnessrntemperatures for each of the channels. The real-time display corrects the data for aircraftrnattitude and position, yielding a display with a spatial aspect ratio of one.rnThe AIMR instrument has participated in a number of field projects including: BeaufortrnArctic Storms Experiment (BASE), Marine Stratocumulus Tops experiment (MCST),rnSurface Heat Budget of the Arctic experiment (SHEBA), Wildfire Experiment (WIFE),rnand Indian Ocean Experiment (INDOEX). In some of the images from BASE, MCST,rnand INDOEX, streaking occurred across the image coincident with the scan direction.rnThis streaking has been identified as an error source contributing to the overall error inrnretrievals. It is believed that the streaking could be a result of data handling relative torncalibration. Analysis to determine the cause of this streaking and modifications to therndata-handling software and post-processing software to correct the images will berndescribed.
