In a recently initiated program - the Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Science DemonstrationrnProgram (UAVSDP) - NASA is demonstrating the use of UAVs in airborne sciencernmissions. UAVs have advantages of long duration flight, high altitude flight, or thernability to fly in dangerous situations where traditional aircraft cannot be used. The firstrnphase of this NASA Earth Science program, in which UAVs will eventually become arnroutine part of the Suborbital Science program, is underway. The initial solicitationrnreceived 46 proposals, ranging in application from atmospheric chemistry to meteorologyrnto precision farming. Proposed UAV platforms included large and small, high and lowrnaltitude aircraft. Eleven teams were selected for further consideration. These proposedrnfive different UAV platforms, and science and application programs covering geographicrnareas from the equator to northern latitudes, from Atlantic to Pacific. More than tworndozen different instruments were proposed to be flown in various combinations andrnconfigurations for chemical sampling, imaging, and monitoring of local physicalrncharacteristics. Development of detailed implementation plans and proposals followed.rnThe program has selected two 3-year science demonstration programs. One will flyrnelectric field instruments on the General Atomics Altus-DT aircraft to investigaternthunderstorm electrical budgets and the relationships between storm morphology andrnlightning. The other will fly the AeroVironment solar-powered Pathfinder Plus torndemonstrate agricultural optimization by remote sensing of coffee fields. This paperrndescribes the role of UAVs within NASA's Earth Science Enterprise (ESE), the processrnand findings of the UAVSDP program, and plans for upcoming science missions.
