Removal of heavy metal ions from industrial effluents and wastewaters by ion exchange~(1-3) (IX) has some advantages over other separation methods, such as precipitation or biological processes, because IX allows, not only for the elimination of metals from these effluents, but, also for their recovery directly contributing to resource conservation.~(4,5) The main limitation of IX is the generation of chemical wastes produced during conditioning and regeneration steps. This limitation can be overcome by applying reagent-less (and waste-free, as a result) IX technologies such as parametric pumping ~(6-9), dual-temperature IX processes~(10) and thermal IX fractionation~(11,12) which exploit the influence of temperature on the affinity of ion exchangers towards certain ions. Chelating rsins, which are known to be highly selective towards heavy metal ions, have found little use in studles on temperature-resonsive IX separation processes, although they meet the main requirement for their application in dual-temperature IX separation: a high heat of IX reaction.~(8, 13-16) The present study was undertaken 1) to confirm a previously developed approach~(17,18) which allows for the prediction of temperature dependencies of IX equilibrium on chelating resins and which can be applied for the selection of chelating resins suitable for separation of certain ion mixtures by applying temperature-responsive IX fractionation techniques and also for the preselection of ligands with promising characteristics for use in the synthesis of new chelating resins with temperatureresponsive selectivity and 2) to elucidate the influence of complexation conditions in the resin phase on temperature dependence of the cation-exchange equilibrium.
