At the present time it is no longer a problem to decrease the concentration of nitrates in drinking water well below the required limit of 50 mg/L and - simultaneously - to achieve a high breakthrough capacity of anion exchanger toward nitrates. Strongly basic anion exchangers with -N~+Pr_3 functional groups, exhibting higher affinity toward nitrate over sulfate, were introduced into industrial practice and thus the adverse effect of sulfates in the raw water on nitrate removal efficiency was eliminated~(1,2)
