Inorganic ion exchange materials are widespread in nature. There are literaly hundreds if not thousands on such compounds, including clays, zeolites, manganese oxides, hydrotalcites, certain phosphates, silicates and many more. They possess a number of advantages over organic resins which commend their use in special cases. They exhibit greater stability to high temperature and high radiation fields. However, it should be recognized that a number of these exchangers are susceptable to hydrolytic decomposition in acid or basic solutions at elevated temperatures. Of primary importance is the very high selectivities exhibited by many of the inorganics for specific ions. This specificity stems from the closeness of approach of the ions to the fixed groups along the lines proposed by Eisenman.~(1,2)
