Among the strong base anion exchangers, those based on quaternized 4-vinylpyridine divinylbenzene (DVB) copolymers can be an alternative of the above-mentioned exchangers, in certain applications. Anion exchangers with 1-alky1-4-vinylpyridinium structural units are used in recovery and purification processes of plutonium from scrap materials. The process consists of treatment of these materials with nitric acid leading to the anionic Pu (IV) nitrato complex, it being retained by means of the strong base anion exchangers. The advantage of the quaternized 4-vinylpyridine based exchangers compared to classical ones, based on styrene - DVB copolymers, is due to the much higher resistance to nitric acid of the pyridine aromatic rings than of those of styrene which are much more susceptible to the nitration reaction~1.
