1-Alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborates (1) have been investigated as electrochemical solvents. Cyclic voltammograms of nitrobenzene and the three isomeric dinitrobenzenes in acetonitrile and 1 demonstrate unprecedentedly strong ion-pairing effects on the corresponding dinitro dianions in 1. All four nitro compounds underwent electrochemical reductive acetylation in good yield in 1 containing acetic anhydride. These are the first reported preparative electrolyses in ionic liquids. The viscosity of liquids 1 leads to lower diffusion coefficients (by factors of 200 or more) indicating that these media are not well suited for electroanalytical methods requiring high sensitivity.
