Land cover (LC) information is increasingly used in regional scale models supporting climate change and biogeochemical cycle studies. An important element drawn from LC data is the amount of impervious surface present in an area. Impervious surface extents must be accounted for many modeling applications, including hydrologic models and studies of the urban heat island effect. Including impervious surface data in regional models is particularly challenging due to the tradeoff between spatial resolution of the remotely sensed images used to map impervious surfaces and the cost, availability, and usability the resulting image data set. Landsat images have frequently been used to map impervious surfaces, but such imagery is difficult to acquire and use for large study areas. While not providing a comparable spatial resolution, the higher temporal resolution of the 250 meter MODIS sensor may provide a viable alternative. This study evaluated the use of multi-temporal MODIS NDVI images to map impervious surfaces in a major metropolitan area.
