This paper presents a holistic model of life cycle costing which combines process specific information such as cost of lost production, management decisions such as maintenance policy, and purchasing decisions such as hardware architecture. This model can then be used to evaluate the interactions of these parameters in terms of the total life cycle cost of the control system. The model will show that for Critical Process Control the reliability/availability/safety of a control system has the most dominant effect on the life cycle cost. This attribute of the control system is primarily determined at the point of specification and purchase and can not be significantly improved after that point. The model can be used to evaluate different purchase options and evaluate the economic value of different architectures compared to their installed costs.
